When asked to do family photography / family portraits, I always want to spice things up a bit and make them unique and original. So I aim for family portrait sessions that are comfortable and relaxed, whether at home or on location. I want the kids to play and have fun. I do better family photography this way.
Many family portraits are of the traditional poses, but lack the look and feel of photojournalism. I prefer to introduce a candid element into my family photography. Locations help for family photography (Yavapai County has many great locations), but they aren't the most important part of the family portrait. I try to make sure that the family is the main subject and I capture them as best I can as a professional photographer.
I usually encourage the family to choose locations and poses that reflect their personality and style. This can vary from a park or at home for posed shots. Posing at home is great because of the comfort factor. For family photography, Yavapai County is great for location photography. From there I try my best to loosen the family up to get posed photojournalism. You can see what results from that below, which comes from my experience.
